Recruitment

Hiring the right person for the job is an important process for all employers and requires attention to ensure the correct decision emerges and due process is followed. Regardless of the seniority of the position, recruitment can be expensive in terms of cost and time. This section provides practical guidelines on how to implement an effective recruitment process in your company and outlines how to handle the equality issues that may arise under the Employment Equality Acts 1998 to 2015.

Job applicants with convictions

21/03/2017 - It’s been almost a year since the enactment of the 2016 Criminal Justice (Spent Convictions and Certain Disclosures) Act. Since its commencement, the Act has restricted the scope of self-declaration by not requiring job applicants to disclose a spent conviction and making it unlawful to penalise an employee for not doing so.

Good practice guide to pre-employment medical assessments

16/03/2015 - Ideally, a pre-employment medical examination for a potential new employee should be done prior to issuing an employment contract, rather than making a job offer conditional on passing this examination.

Sample employee referral scheme

22/01/2015 - In some organisations there is an established practice of encouraging employees to refer people they know for job vacancies within the organisation. Referral schemes can range from the informal to a highly structured formal approach.

Disclosure of a disability during the probation period

04/04/2014 - The case of Siobhan Connell v Ergo Services Ltd, DEC-E/2014/005, issued on 10 February 2014 under the Employment Equality Acts 1998-2011, offers useful guidance to employers on how to successfully manage performance issues during the probationary period where an employee has disclosed a disability.
